The Leadership in Strategic Health Communication for Cancer Prevention, 2010

“The Leadership in Strategic Health Communication Workshop" was held successfully in 2008 and 2009 by the Center for Community Health Research and Development (CCRD) and Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs (JHU/CCP). After the two previous workshops, CCRD has received many positive feedbacks and desire to maintain the workshop from participants. Therefore, CCRD and JHU/CCP in collaboration with the Health Bridge Foundation of Canada in Vietnam organized the 3rd workshop "The Leadership in Strategic Health Communication for Cancer Prevention" from September 20th to September 25th, 2010 in Ha Long Bay, Quang Ninh.

As the two previous workshops, the participants of 2010 workshop were both national and international. They are program managers and coordinators who are working in the field of cancer prevention from INGOs, LNGOs, Government agencies such as Ministry of Health, Center for Health Information and Education, O2 TV Channel... and hospitals such as K Hospital, Bach Mai Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital.

Guided by the very experienced and well-known international health communication expert, PhD. Benjamin V. Loraze - Associate Director and Chief, Training Division, JHU/CCP, the participants explored and approached basic knowledge in modern strategic communication, leadership skills and methods to design an effective behavior change communication program. They also got familiar with the SCOPE - a tool to help analyze, develop and evaluate effectively strategic communication programs. Besides, this workshop focused more on translating research into communication strategies and programs for cancer prevention.

In addition to the main activities, participants also participated in additional activities such as cultural night and market place, etc. Through these activities, participants exchanged and further understood one another. In particular, market place helped participants be able to share and learn experiences from one another in terms of media campaigns implementation as well as communication materials production. Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Huong - from the Vietnam Steering Committee on Smoking and Health, shared her thought after the workshop: "I found the lesson contents are really useful.  The teacher applied very active training methods, which help promote individual and collective intellectuals and enhance the effectiveness of teamwork".

This one-week workshop has helped participants to change their ways of thinking in approaching and applying effective behavior-changing communication methods. After the workshop, participants have been able to design communication strategies for cancer prevention appropriate to their programs or projects.
