Workshop: Advanced Research Methods in Evaluating Communication and Public Health Programs in 2009

In order to improve capacity for the staff and to access modern analysis and research methodologies, the Center for Community Health Research and Development (CCRD) offered the workshop “"Advanced Research Methods in Evaluating Communication and Public Health Programs in 2009”. This is facilitated by Dr. Larry Kincaid, Scientific Associate and Senior Advisor of the Research and Evaluation Department, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Center for Communication Programs (CCP). The workshop and technical assistance was funded through a grant from the Atlantic Philanthropies as an integral part of the Project for building capacity for improving the quality of health Information-Education-Communication in Vietnam.

The workshop was conducted from 9 to 20 March, 2009 with 12 participants. The participants were staff working in the communication and research field at CCRD, Vietnam Administration of HIV/AIDS, Hanoi School of Public Health and Indochina Research Limited in Vietnam. It was a unique chance for researchers, and especially data managers, to improve their knowledge and accessmodern analysis which was applying to evaluate the impact of communication to target audiences.

This workshop not only added more knowledge to the one held in 2008, but also helped participants practicethe skills presented in the workshop. By using the data of a national sampling survey from Voice of Vietnam’s baseline survey, Dr Larry guided participants though the applying of the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) in analyzing the communication effect on target audiences as well as sharing his experience on how to analysis data, what obstacles are met in analyzing data and how to reject factors which affected the analysis result. The open and relaxed discussion between the facilitator and the participants while discussing issues and inquiries resulted in a comfortable and effective learning atmosphere.

The participants apply their learning experience from the workshop to analyze communication effects on the target audience in strategic health behavior change communication campaigns and interventions.
