Client Profile in Hanoi and Nghe An in 2017

Research was conducted in order to update information about people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) in Hanoi and Nghe An in 2017. Research findings were used to make strategic planning for the outreach and service delivery program.

The research methodology was to exploit and analyze information of PLHIV collected by community service providers through forms. The research was carried out with 508 HIV detected cases from June to November in 2017 at HIV testing facilities (district health centers, hospitals) in Nghe and Hanoi and obtained some remarkable results.

Some features of demography:

The proportion of PLHIV participated in research by gender, age and working away from home status

In the last six months of 2017, the majority of HIV cases found were sexually transmitted (68% in Hanoi and 51% in Nghe An), in which low-risk group (normal people) accounted for 22% in both provinces (24% in Hanoi and 16% in Nghe An)

Regarding high-risk behavior (belonging to Key populations group – KPs), sexual relations and using drugs and stimulants were primary causes of infection.

The research showed that 90% of PLHIV have sexual partners.

Regarding the use of drugs and stimulants, on average each PLHIV had about two infecting partners. All drug users who inject bought needles and syringes at pharmacies (100%). The percentage of people using synthetic drugs was also quite high, up to 54%. Among injecting drug partners of PLHIV, 75% tested for HIV (71% in Hanoi and 80% in Nghe An), and 67% of injecting drugs partners received positive result. (70.6% in Ha Noi and 62.5% in Nghe An).

Some information about testing and treatment status:

The results of the research was published in a Disemination Workshop on April 13th, 2018 organized in Hanoi with participation of Hanoi CDC, USAID and international NGOs, including Ha Noi Medical University, and Representatives of CBOs in Ha Noi.
