The Center for Community Health Research and Development (CCRD) in cooperation with Ha Nam provincial Women’s Union has implemented the initiative “Citizen participation for Social development” in Ha Nam province from August, 2013 to December, 2014. The initiative is sponsored by the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR), US.
The issues of environmental pollution, especially in the handicraft village and industrial areas, are more interested in recent years. The initiative was launched with the purposes (1) to help the CSOs and people’s groups to engage and to improve the participation at the local authority levels and link with their representatives in solving the problems related to the environment; (2) Enhance the role of the media in the protection of the local environment.
The designed intervention approach of the initiative is to put people ‘group in the community as the focus with the purpose of promoting creativity of the local people in the environment protection activities. During the initial deployment, the initiative has developed tested intervention model in Hamlet 2, Tran Xa village, Nguyen Ly commune, Ly Nhan district, where is famous for long tradition of rice paper making activities.
Besides direct supportive activities for people’ group through series of trainings which will provide knowledge, skills and practices about environmental protection, the initiative also organizes round table discussions, advocacy meetings, the communication activities to raise the voice of the local people in the protection of the environment, and strengthen links with local leaders to jointly solve these problems.
